Within the ever-expanding musical landscape exists the ever-narrowing concept of “Genre.” While this may be a helpful navigational tool for the listener, it can be a limiting construct for the intrepid music maker. Most artists are naturalized within the boundaries of one signature style. Haj i Ji, however, is an artist whose style can be best defined by a willingness to travel across existing borders. His music, like his life, is a grand adventure, honoring and reverent of the essential truths found in all traditions, as it is resounding of a refreshing originality.  Ever elusive, he defies all attempts to be confined to a specific genre, time or place.

When Haj began DJing in NYC in the early aughts, he came with crates of obscure and exciting music. His discriminating ear met with his love for community and he found his tribe through the music. The love multiplied. Haj honed his unique vision of what was possible with a responsive dance floor during his three year residency at NYC's seminal underground bacchanal--Body Temple. In 2005, he gathered his favorite cohorts and flew off on his own to found Freek Factory. This fabled crew was at the center of a Brooklyn warehouse revival, giving the East Coast underground its first taste of what was just beginning to pop in the Brixton and San Francisco bass music scenes. Bassnectar was an early resident. In 2006 he co-founded Sub Swara and began producing music.

For the next five years, Haj maintained a relentless touring schedule while continuing to host club nights in NYC, most notably a run of events called "CHuRCH" at club Love in the West Village. Haj left Sub Swara, after their groundbreaking first album Coup D' Yah, and moved to San Francisco. Since then, he has released music with producer/violinist HÄANA as Nyxyss, which can best be described as soundtracks waiting for a film, as well as Rising Smoke of the Hobo Kings with production guru Jon Margulies and Freek Factory alumn Micah Blacklight. Above And Below (February 2016) is the debut single + remixes release on Haj i Ji's new label On The Perch Records, and marks the first time he has released music under his own name. Reports Of My Demise... EP (September 2016) is the second diverse release from Haj i Ji on his label On The Perch Records.
